Oral contact with a monogamous partner can help keep foreplay (or the whole event) fun, but when done with someone else, it can lead to lifelong discomfort.

The rectangular latex product known as dental dams received their name because of their use in oral hygienic procedures.

Recently, they've made quite a splash as a gateway to safer oral love making as they are easy to use and inexpensive.

Using a Dental Dam

The partner who is using the dental dam will simply apply the latex to the part of the body about to be serviced. To enhance pleasure, it is recommended that a water based lubricant be applied first (oil based lubes can damage the latex) to enhance the experience. Once this is done, oral contact can be enjoyed with safety and satisfaction.

Making Your Own Dental Dam

With all new things there is a process for which they are accepted. With dental dams, it is no different. The truth is that if someone wishes to use protection while partaking in foreplay but is embarrassed to, then that person is not ready to engage in the activity. If, on the other hand, dental dams seem to be hard to come by, then they can be made quite easily.

To make a dental dam, all one has to do is cut the tip off of a condom (one without Nonoxynol-9, which can cause the tongue to go numb) and then cut the condom lengthwise. This will provide the latex rectangle necessary for performing safe oral sex.

However, unless arts and crafts are that much fun for the adapter of such devices, doing this will not be necessary as dental dams are typically between $1-$2, and specifically suited for oral sex.

Dental Dams are Preferable to Former Condoms

As mentioned before, some condoms have lubricants that are designed to numb the penis or stimulate the vagina. While they may not be dangerous to ingest, they can have effects that are not preferable.

On a final note, for those with concerns that the absence of a wet mouth stimulating them will kill the joy of this experience, it should be noted that in relationships outside of a disease-free marriage, safety should come before pleasure. Reversing these priorities could damage the lifelong pleasure that love making can bring when one does finally decide to settle down.

Dental dams are a great way to maintain a healthy life and should be used in all physically intimate relationships that are not monogamous.
